Some basic terms and clarifications
for the confused!
I have tried to explain a few terms as plainly as I can - these
reflect some of the questions I get asked when we quote for
web sites.
Website - this refers to
a collection of web pages whether static pages
or database driven.
Web page - a page you view
on a web site. These can be:
Database driven pages
- they are produced from a stored database of information and
can interact with the user to perform various tasks.
Static web pages
- pages of text, information and sometimes special features
such as flash animations which do not change and can have some
functionality with users, such as sending forms.
'Interactive' Okay,
that is my terminology but I feel that best encompasses other
functions which give more functionality, such as javascript,
CGI scripts. The simplest way of explaining them is that there
is mostly no database involved and that there are little interactive
functions performed using them which add a feature to the page,
such as a drop down menu, a form being sent, a guest book etc.
Web space - the area where
web pages site or in which data and pages sit on the Internet
- see also 'hosting'.
Domain name - the name
which you can reach a web site by typing this into your web
browser, such as http://www.bestwebsitedesign.co.uk. A domain
name is simply the address where a web site will be - some places
allow a simple holding page - name address etc., to say that
it is being held pending a site being added.
Hosting is where the web pages sit on the Internet and
therefore where the domain name will point once the site is
ready. Web pages sit at the hosting facility to make the web
site. Hosting also covers e-mail access, FTP and can provide
the database functions which make sites
'interact' with users.
URL - the domain name or
web page within this that you can reach in your web browser
- most people refer to this as the domain name (although it
has other meanings too!).
FTP - the method of adding
your web pages, images etc. onto the Internet web space (stands
for File Transfer Protocol).
Links
- in general this means a link to a web page or another web
site such as /terminology.html for an internal web page link
or http://www.best-web-site-design.co.uk/terminology.html.
It can also be a link to a file, such as a picture or a document
or item for download.
