Miscellaneous functions
There are a range of other important page functions which
do not fit under a particular heading. These are
explained below:
Add / edit links
|
Creates
or edits a hyperlink to a page on your web site.
Step 1) Make sure you are on the 'Miscellaneous
tab' of the page editor (click on the tab!).
Step 2) Click on the image or select the
text that you want to link from (make sure any text is highlighted
to be selected)
Step 3) Click on the icon above (in your
editor!) or right button and select 'Add internal page link' (in
the menu that appears) and you will be given a list of pages and
products on your site. Note, if you are editing an existing
link, the option will say 'Edit internal link'.
Step 4) Select one of the pages, products
or categories of product and a link will be made to that page,
product or category.
By clicking on a page or product category or product
in the list, you create a link to that page, category or product
from the image or text that you have selected.
Uses include producing an unusual menu, linking
to a specific site page within text or from an image or building
a more flexible product catalogue where you can link directly
to categories from any image or text that you like (for instance
you might have a special offer linked to a page, product category
listing or product).
TIP: Links can be added wherever you have
selected an image or a piece of text.
NB You must be on the miscellaneous tab in
order to edit links.

Link properties to set / modify:
The image to the left, shows a list
of pages on the site. If they have a star * next to them,
they are not published yet. If you link to an unpublished
page, this will effectively not show if someone clicks on
the link. This is a useful feature when building up a page
before it is published. Don't link to pages that are not
published yet, unless you are going to publish them before
you publish the page that links to them - otherwise
you will end up with a broken link (a link that
goes nowhere).
Pages not on the menu system are shown
lower on the same window. In this view you can see pages
which are published and unpublished but which WILL NOT appear
on the automated menu system. These pages are useful for
deeper structures, where you don't want too much clutter
on the menu itself, but instead want to selectively link
from a particular page or pages.
Products and categories are shown further
down still, and you can link directly to a product or its
category (which will show all of the products in that category)
by clicking on the product or the heading.
|
Target: This means you can choose
to open the link in a new window. This is useful where you want
to keep a visitor on your site but sill have useful links etc..
Link: shows the URL for the link
Advanced options
Name: name of the link (use it to create anchors).
Title: the text is show when mouse cursor is over the
link.
Link to cart: places a link
directly to your shopping cart.
Link to checkout: links directly to
the checkout, so that the customer can finish shopping and buy
the goods.
Note: to remove a link, open link dialogue
window and remove string of property 'link'
To edit properties of a link select the whole link
text or its part and then click on the corresponding button in
toolbar.
Anchors: Anchors are points within a page which you can
link to. Why use them? A good reason might be to jump to the top
of a page from the bottom OR if you have a form, to jump from
section to section if some of it is not relevant OR an FAQ on
a page with links down the page and then links back to the questions.
You can also jump from one page to an anchor point on another
page so that he user is not presented with the top of the page
but with a specific relevant point within a page.
Create an anchor
To create an anchor you can specify value of 'name' only in the
link area. To explain: select an image or text and add link -
simply write in the Name box, the name of the anchor - this must
be a single word with no odd characters, for example 'name'.
Link to an anchor
Go to where you want to link TO this anchor point and create a
new link by selecting the page in the internal link facility (yes,
even if you are on the same page), but this time, in the 'Link:'
box, add the anchor name with a # in front, so in the example
above you would add #name. This will then create a link within
the page to the anchor point http://www.yoursitename.co.uk/yourpagename.html#name.
If you want to link to the anchor from another page
Do as before , add the complete url and then the anchor name with
a hash - e.g. http://www.yoursitename.co.uk/yourpagename.html#name
