Miscellaneous functions

There are a range of other important page functions which do not fit under a particular heading. These are explained below:

Creates a link on the selected text or image or to change properties of the selected existing link.

If you simply want to link to a web site, just type it - i.e. www.bbc.co.uk and add a space afterwards. The system will add the link automatically. If however, you wish to link from text or an image then follow the instructions below.

For more advanced or demanding users, there are many extra options available (see below).

Step 1) Make sure you are on the 'Miscellaneous tab' of the page editor (click on the tab!).

Step 2) Click on the image or select the text that you want to link from (make sure any text is highlighted to be selected).

Step 3) Click on the icon above (in your editor!) or right button and select 'Add link' (in the menu that appears) and you will be given a list of pages and products on your site. Note, if you are editing an existing link, the option will say 'Edit link'.

Step 4) Add the full url of the web site you wish to link to, i.e. if it is the BBC, then be sure to put http://www.bbc.co.uk/ and not www.bbc.co.uk, as the latter will be assumed to be on your website.

TIP: Links can be added wherever you have selected an image or a piece of text.

TIP: e-mails and full urls will automatically show as links on a page.

TIP: You can link to other images and documents such as Word files and PDF files - see below.

NB You must be on the miscellaneous tab in order to edit links.

NB If you link to an external image or document using the browse option - i.e. one on your hard drive, this will be automatically brought onto your web site. Please note that it is also possible to upload these documents using the file upload facility.

Insert a link box

Link properties to set / modify:

Target: This means you can choose to open the link in a new window. This is useful where you want to keep a visitor on your site but sill have useful links etc..

Link: defines an URL for the link; That is where you type your link! always the full url :http://www.bbc.co.uk/ and not www.bbc.co.uk for example.

Advanced options:

Name:
name of the link (use it to create anchors).

Title:
the text is show when mouse cursor is over the link

This uses a JavaScript to pop up an new window BUT unlike target above, it allows you to specify the size of the window, so that, for example, you can fit the window snugly around the image that you show in it. You need to know the image size (use insert image to check and look at the width and height).

Note: to remove a link, open link dialogue window and remove string of property 'link'

To edit properties of a link select the whole link text or its part and then click on the corresponding button in toolbar.

Anchors:
Anchors are points within a page which you can link to. Why use them? A good reason might be to jump to the top of a page from the bottom OR if you have a form, to jump from section to section if some of it is not relevant OR an FAQ on a page with links down the page and then links back to the questions. You can also jump from one page to an anchor point on another page so that he user is not presented with the top of the page but with a specific relevant point within a page.

Create an anchor
To create an anchor you can specify value of 'name' attribute only in the link area. To explain: select an image or text and add link - simply write in the Name box, the name of the anchor - this must be a single word with no odd characters, for example 'name'.

Link to an anchor
Go to where you want to link TO this anchor point and create a new link, but this time, in the 'Link:' box, add the anchor name with a # in front, so in the example above you would add #name. You must add the complete url and then the anchor name with a hash - e.g. http://www.yoursitename.co.uk/index.html#name. This will then create a link within the page to the anchor point. To make this easier, we suggest you use the internal page link facility to select the page (as this adds the full url) and then add the anchor name afterwards.

If you want to link to the anchor from another page

Do as before but this time, select the other page you wish to link to.

Linking to things other than sites or pages
You can, in addition to linking to other web sites and pages also link to other images, word documents or PDFs etc. This is useful if you wish to embed a form for off-line distribution and printing, or wish to link to a larger image for instance.

Simply browse the image which you wish to use as a link to the document or image (see inserting images - you can browse up documents such as PDF and Word in the same way).

Once you have selected your image (or text), you then use the insert link button, when you have selected this image (or text area). Then, instead of using the 'Link:' area to specify a file which you have browsed up into your site (using the browse button) or one which is already there from the file window. You can choose an image or file here to link to and it will create a link to this. If you want this to open in a new window, use the target feature.

Linking to the e-commerce cart
See the internal page link facility for this.
