Page Choices
Page choices control lots of information that is great to
be able to have control of, but which you may find you don't
worry about at first. We like you to be in control, so we
give you lots of options to make your site as flexible as
we would want it for ourselves! |
Page choices are reached from the miscellaneous tab, from
the page choices link on the page editors and also from the pages
list by clicking on any of the page attributes listed, apart from
the file name and the 'edit' options.
Page choices alters many of the attributes of a page that are
not necessarily shown on page but which decide where the page
is on the site, under which menu and how it is saved (it's file
name). Many of these attributes help with web site optimisation
for search engines and so it is sensible for you to be familiar
with them when you are happy with every day operation of your
site.
The essential item here is 'Page name', as this is what appears
in the menu.
So, what do you control in page choices?
The page name: which is used in the automated menus and
also to easily identify the page in the pages list. As standard,
this will be untitled and then increment, untitled1 etc. which
obviously makes a mockery of any menu. This must therefore
be renamed, if you touch no other settings.
The template it uses: this control how the overall page looks.
You control the 'centre' of the page in the editor, although you
can change the overall look and feel of your site, using the template
editor.
The menu it sits in: You can have lots of different sections
and subsections and place one or more pages in each and even swap
them around between sections if you wish to reorganise a site's
structure.
The file name: as standard, our system names them untitled1.html,
automatically incrementing the numbers so that you don't have
a clash. Each page ust have a different name and the system will
not allow you to name two pages the same.
In practice, you can save a page name as any file name you like,
as long as you don't try to add spaces. If you rename a file,
it will need republishing to take effect. If you rename it, the
system will automatically put the correct file extension on for
you (.html) so that you don't have to remember it. Why is
this useful? If you are doing web site optimisation, it
can be helpful to use a smattering of key words in the file name.
Images used for the page in the menu: See the menu explanation
for more details of menu functions.
Special functions:
e-commerce The page can be used for an e-commerce template
- sales, category, product and cart pages can be designed and
used as the basis of your e-commerce pages.
Pages not appearing in the menu: You might not want a page
to appear in the automated menu, in which case, this is where
you choose that. Your page might be used to allow a customer to
see work privately, for instance.
Thank you page for forms: You can design a page as a thank
you for after a form is submitted by a visitor. You cll this page
thankyou.html and click the option for the page not appearing
in the menu.
Password protection: You can password protect pages within
the system to keep them private for certain customers, who you
have given the user name and password to.
Display order: Order in which the page appears in the automated
menu. Low numbers appear higher up in the menu (or to the left
in horizontal menus).
